These pileated woodpeckers are large! Once walking in the forest, I suddenly came upon a pair of them hammering away at a large pine tree. They seemed very big and powerful. They were about 8 feet away. They excavate large rectangular nest holes and then leave them after one season. These nest holes become homes for forest songbirds, ducks, bats, swifts, and pine martens.
